Musical chairs: Kerry Ellis is looking for a bigger home
11 May 2009
Musical star Kerry Ellis, who played wicked witch Elphaba in the West End musical Wicked, hung up her broomstick yesterday after two years as the show's lead and is now house-hunting in Hertfordshire.
Kerry, originally from Harleston in Suffolk, has her sights on the town of Hitchin, near Stevenage, with a budget of about £400,000.
Kerry said:
Now is a great time to take advantage of the market and you get a lot more for your money there than in London.
Kerry, who turned 30 last week, bought her first property at 21 - a £100,000 two-bedroom maisonette in Brockley, South-East London - with earnings from a nine-month stint singing on a cruise ship.
I've worked since I was 16 and it seemed sensible to invest my savings in property. Brockley was ideal because I had family nearby and I could walk my dog Jack in nearby Greenwich Park.
She now lives with her PR boyfriend, James Townsend, in a £220,000 two-bedroom new-build house in the same area. They plan to let this and sell Kerry's maisonette which she has been letting out.
We want somewhere bigger and with more character. I don't have any immediate plans for children but you have to think about the future.
